Kid Fonque aka Allan Nicoll has played a vital role in South African electronic music and club culture over the last 20 years, trending from DJ to promoter and producer to a career as label manager and radio and TV host.He made his DJ debut at the legendary 206 over twenty years ago, and has since DJed alongside Gilles Peterson, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Tom Misch, Bonobo, Skepta, Henrik Schwarz, Âme and Rich Medina.

He founded the Stay True Sounds label in 2015, and its key artists include Fka Mash, Dwson, Zito Mowa, China Charmeleon and Sio. In 2019, he launched sister label STY TRU BTS to showcase South African beats, soul, hip-hop and electronica. Thus far, the label has released radiant records from Sej_, YoursTruly, Wun.Eye, Mateyu and more.As a producer, he’s collaborated with Theo Parrish, Charles Webster, Zaki Ibrahim, Atjazz, DMalice, Jonny Miller and many more, and on his debut album, 2019’s ‘I Move To A Different Beat’ he worked with Ty, Ziyon, Card On Spokes and others. The album received rave 5/5 reviews from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Alex Barck (Jazzanova) and Rainer Trüby.

Later in 2020, he’ll release a collaborative album with Jonny Miller called ‘Connected’, withfeatures from Toshi, Sio, Lay-Far and Jaidene Veda.His Selective Styles radio show started on national broadcaster 5FM in 2016. The biggest niche radio show in SA, it won Best Dance Radio Show at the 2019 Dance Music Awards. Other StayTrue Sounds winners at the awards were Dwson featuring Sio’s ‘Nobody Else’, which won Best Video, and SculpturedMusic’s ‘Sad To Think’ (Fka Mash Glitch Dub), which won Remix of the Year.

TV show Kid Fonque Presents True Music Sessions premiered on Channel O in 2019, and in the 13-episode series, Kid Fonque chatted to cutiing-edge musos such as Sio, Daev Martian and Gina Jeanz. Free of boundaries – be they genres or borders – Kid Fonque traverses styles, from bass and broken beat to bossa nova, hip-hop and every shade of house, and crosses mediums. He’s the de facto spokesperson for Mzansi’s electronic music scene and one of its proudest proponents.
